Placing Your Hive

Now that you know what you need to pick a hive and take care of it, you also need to check to make sure that you have a good location for it.

Is it Legal?

This is usually the first question a beginner beekeeper has to ask themselves. It will depend on your state or even your city. There are some cities or states that actually have laws that ban beekeeping, but this isn’t common. As urban beekeeping becomes more popular various cities are removing these bans too, so always check for recent information. If you live in a rural area, you’re usually allowed to keep bees, but you may have to register your hive with the Department of Agriculture. Some states will also require annual inspection for your hive to check for diseases. They also may restrict your ability to transport your bees. For example, most states won’t let you transfer bees across state lines unless they’ve been inspected recently.
